We have been asked to share our Hawaiian Haystacks recipe with you. These are really easy to make and everyone is happy because they can add their own toppings. It is not much of a recipe, more of just a how to.
I actually make Hawaiian Haystacks 2 different ways.
1. My favorite way to make them is with a homemade gravy and left over chicken. I cook a whole chicken in the crock pot and we will eat that for a meal. Then the next day, I will make a gravy from the drippings and add left over bits of chicken meat to the gravy to serve over the rice.
2. When I want to make Hawaiian Haystacks, but have not cooked a whole chicken. I just put chicken tenders in the crockpot and 2 cans of cream of chicken soup. I will let this cook on low for 4-6 hours and use this to serve over the rice.
Both ways are really simple. This is a quick and easy meal that my family loves.
Basically all you do is cook the rice. Serve rice with chicken and gravy and each person can add their own toppings.
Some of our favorite toppings.
Toppings can include:
shredded cheddar cheese
pineapple tidbits
sliced olives
diced green onion
chopped celery
shredded coconut
slice almonds
diced fresh mushroom
Chow mien noodles
diced tomatoes
peas
mandarin oranges
raisins
diced green pepper
corn
or anything else that you think would be good

ReplyDeleteThis is one of our favorite dishes. You are right, everyone can build their own with their own choice of toppings and no complaining.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE these but the man doesn't so we don't get them very often. I rely on RS Meetings to serve them.

ReplyDeleteNot only is my husband Japanese and accustomed to the family eating a pot of rice every day of his life, but he was born and raised in Hawai'i. He'd never heard of this dish until he joined the church. To say he is horrified that we'd 'ruin' rice by putting all that stuff on it and then have the gall to call it Hawai'ian is an understatement. LOL. Ah well. I like it just fine. Thanks for the recipe.
ReplyDeleteYummy recipe! I love it that your family can customize their dish with their favorite toppings.
ReplyDeleteMy Family loves this recipe. i didn't know anyone else that had ever made it... good to know i'm not alone with the weird topped rice (as my husband would say)
ReplyDeleteWe love haystacks here but we make them with beans since we are vegetarian. I like Frito chips as well on it. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the recipe.
Blessings!

I haven't made these in forever - I love them. Thanks for the fun list of all the different toppings because I always forget what you can put on them (not that it has to be exact!) Love these!
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of this recipe before. I made it last night for dinner using cr. mush & cr. chix soup (only had 1 can of cr. chix!) and chix tenders in the crockpot. YUMMY!!! Topped with chow mein noodles and pineapple (using what I had on hand)---did I say YUMMY!!! Thanks for the recipe!
