Baby Scrapbook

I usually don't like scrapbook kits, but I bought this baby kit at this site and absolutely love it. It is baby first year and it comes with everything you need. It is also reversible. One side of it is girl and the other side is all boy. Its nice because you can buy it before you even know what you are having. I think this would make the best gift for someone. This kit has made scrapbooking my babies first year so much easier.

Summer School

I want to keep my kids learning over the summer. So, I am doing a little "summer school" with them. I do it while the baby is taking his nap so that we don't have as many distractions. We do learning activities for about an hour a day on the week days. We have writing time, math time, language time and reading time. Then we do other fun activities like computer games, puzzles, arts & crafts or games. It is a fun time that we all look forward to spending time together.

Writing Time

Make it fun! For writing time, I got each kid a dry erase board for a dollar at Target and the writing tablets at Walmart for about the same price, and side walk chalk.

2 C. Water
Mandarin Oranges
1 Small Cool whip

Mix together jello, pudding and water in saucepan. Cook until it thickens. Boil 1 minute. Set in fridge overnight or until set and cool. Mix with mixer one small bowl of cool whip. Whip until creamy. Stir in oranges.

Boys Embellished Letters

I made these for my boys' room. Here is how I made them.

(Everything was from Michaels or in my scrapbook stash)

Mod Podge
Sponge brush
Exacto knife
Scrapbook paper
Ink pad

1. I got the letters from Michaels. They were already painted white.

2. I applied mod podge to the letter with the sponge brush and then put on the scrapbook paper.

3. After the mod podge is dry, I used the exacto knife to cut the paper around each letter.

4. I then added other small pieces of paper to some other the letters following the same steps. )apply mod podge, let dry, cut around letter with exacto knife)

5. Ink the edges of each letter with the ink pad. I used brown ink.

6. Mod podge over each letter. This will give it a shiny look.

7. Last, add the embellishments you like. I added buttons, ribbons and sports sticker.

Folder Games

I made these folder games last summer when I was pregnant. I think they turned out cute and will be fun when my daughter gets older. A lot of the folder games include matching shapes and colors. I got the patterns out of two books. Click here for the website. When I got the books I just:
-Copied the games onto white card stock
-Colored the pages
-Cut out the games
-Pasted the back pages to the folders
-Then took everything to Staples to have it laminated
-Cut everything out of the lamination
-Bought Velcro dots so that the pieces stick together when your child find a match and also so you don't lose the pieces. (Velcro dots can be found at any craft store)

I will be honest the games are kind of time consuming, but I don't mind coloring :). I know they will be great for church.

Jewelry Holder

This is definitely one of my favorite things to organize my jewelry. When I first went to college my roommate Morgan had one of these. After seeing it I decided to make one for my room too. It was pretty easy and holds tons of jewelry. I took this picture with only a little jewelry on it so that you can get the idea.

What you need:
Large Frame I bought mine at Michaels-The bigger the frame, the more jewlery it will hold
Chicken Wire-You can buy it at Home Depot
S Hooks- These are also found at Home Depot and hook onto the chicken wire so that you can hook on your jewelry. I would buy pretty small S hooks.
Staple Gun- use small staples so that they do not go through your frame.
Wire Cutters

All you do it cut the chicken wire with wire cutters to fit into your frame. Once you are done with that then you use a staple gun to staple it into the back of your frame. Then you can use the s hooks to hang up your jewelry. I have mine just hanging in my bedroom. My mom and sisters also have them too. Some of them hang them in their closets because they have walk in closets.

Menu Planning

I love menu planning. I seriously don't know how people can make dinner without a menu plan. I plan 3 meals a day because we all eat breakfast and dinner together, and usually my husband comes home for lunch too. Depending on your situation, you may only need or want to plan dinners. I realize that each person has to find what works best for them, but here is how I do it.

*Menu Planning sheet-As you can see mine is nothing special, just a word document I made. I keep lots of copies of it in my "Family Binder."

*Grocery List-I use a magnetic note pad to write down what I will need at the grocery store. So, as I plan my menu I am also making my grocery list.

*Meal Ideas-I keep mine in categories in my recipe book. My categories include: Italian, Chicken, Crock pot, Salads, Mexican, Asian, Meats, Soups, Sandwiches, and Other.

*Calendar or planner-I use this to know what I have going on each week.

*Recipe book- I have one book with most of the recipes I make. I can look at this to see what I will need to buy at the store and add it to my grocery list.

Here is how I do it:

1. I look at my week and what we have going on. I plan meals depending on the amount of time I will have. For example, I have scouts, t-ball practice, and my husband has Young Mens on Tuesday nights. I almost always plan a crock pot meal because I know I will not have time to make anything and I can start it early in the day.

2.I plan out what I want to make for the week taking into consideration what I have on hand and want to get using. Looking at my meal ideas, I plan meals from different categories.

3. After I plan my meals, I look through the recipes and see what I will need to buy to make each meal. I add these to my grocery list.

That's it! It may seem hard at first, but it is really easy once you start doing it. It saves time, you always have everything you need to make each meal, and you don't have to ask yourself every night, "What am I making for dinner?"

Questions I have been asked about menu planning:

What if you don't feel like eating what you planned?
I make something else. I switch meals around if I feel like something else. No big deal.

What if something comes up?
My menu is just a guide. Sometimes we will decide to eat out and I will not make the meal I had planned. I just move it to the next week. I already know I have everything to make that meal.

Chocolate Caramel Brownies

I got this recipe from a lady named Jennifer that my husband used to work with. My husband begs me to make these. They are seriously the BEST! Every time I take them somewhere lots of people want the recipe. I usually make them the night before taking them because they need time to really set up before you cut them so that the caramel doesn't run all over.

Chocolate Carmel Brownies

1 German chocolate cake mix
1/2 c. evaporated milk
1/3 c. evaporated milk
1 cube butter=1/2 cup (melted)
1 package Kraft Caramels
6 oz chocolate chips

Melt caramels and 1/2 c. evaporated milk slowly in microwave. Microwave for 30 seconds then stir. Continue doing this until caramels are melted. Mix cake mix, 1/3 c. evaporated milk, and butter together in mixing bowl. Put 1/2 of cake mixture into 9 x 13 glass dish. (press to cover out the bottom of the pan) Bake for 6-10 minutes at 350 degrees. Sprinkle chocolate chips on hot cake. Pour caramel over chocolate chips. Drop chunks of remaining cake mixture on caramel. Bake for 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees. Regular done-ness test will not work on these because of the caramel.

Note: I sometimes leave out the chocolate chips.

Pregnancy Journal

I had a baby a few months ago and while I was pregnant I wanted a way to remember my pregnancy so I made this pregnancy journal. I loved filling it out as my pregnancy progressed and I know that I will enjoy looking back on what pregnancy was like for me. I also think my new baby {GIRL} will love knowing what pregnancy was like for her mother. I put the pages in 8X8 page covers and then used metal rings to bind it together. I tied ribbons onto the rings. Walmart is the cheapest place for the metal rings. I also tried to make the book as gender neutral as possible since at the time I didn't know what I was having. I made a few of these books as gifts as well.

Front of book
Finding out your pregnant and 1st Trimester
2rd Trimester and place for ultrasound pictures. I made a pocket by using an X-acto knife
3rd Trimester and name ideas
Thoughts about being pregnant and wishes for your new baby's future
Weight gain chart :) and also spots to put pictures of yourself during your pregnancy
How the delivery went and pictures of your new baby

School's Out for Summer!

So, this is the last week of school for my kidos. Summer is here, and now it is time to keep the kids busy! I love the lazy days of summer, but have discovered that my kids are much better behaved if we have some scheduled activities. Not to mention my obsession with having a plan. ha ha. So, here is what we will be doing for the next couple of months.

Our Morning Schedule

Monday: Library Day
Tuesday: Swim Day
Wednesday: Play Group (usually at the park)
Thursday: FREE Movie Day the the local theater ( look for things like this in your area)
Friday: Fun Day (we will be going on field trip or just planning other fun things to do)

In the afternoons, I will be doing a little summer school with my older two kids while the baby naps. Look for more ideas to come.
